Internet weather reports may show the current temperature, but their forecasts for the Island of Roatan are notoriously incorrect. It is very common to see forecasts showing thunderstorms for almost every
day in Roatan. The Honduran mainland area has a rainforest climate, and since Roatan is
a relatively small island 35 miles from the mainland, the weather forecasters
seem to generalize the reports for the entire area.
I have included two versions of weather reporting
for the Roatan area. CNN's weather report link above in red lettering, and The Weather Channel's report
at the top of this page. These are what most of us would consider to be very credible sources,
but their pin-point accuracy in weather reporting for the island of Roatan, and in
particular, the Reef House Resort's area of the island, is understandably
far too general.
As Carol at the Reef House so aptly described the weather situation, "We can
sit at the patio-bar [where it's warm and showing no signs of rain] and watch
the thunderstorms on the mainland at night".
The rainy season
usually has little affect on the diving. 2005 was considered the worst year ever, but we were able to keep diving for the most part. We normally experience no lightning, just
brief showers which don't often cool the air a great deal. Air temps are normally around 85
to 90 degrees, with the water temperature normally
around 80 degrees.
Rainy Season
The rainy season is generally late October and into November. Even when it does rain, the showers are usually
brief and warm. Obviously the weather will do as it pleases so we recommend an e-mail to us, close to the time of your arrival, in order to give you an update on what to expect.
Hurricane Season
Late August and early September seem to be the
time of year when our part of the world might hear about a hurricane
building somewhere in the Atlantic. But Roatan has been very fortunate in
the past... If you want to see what the National Hurricane Center is
